The Oakland Athletics have acquired Ben Zobrist and Yunel Escobar from the Tampa Bay Rays, Susan Slusser reported on Saturday. In the deal the Rays will be acquiring Catcher Jon Jaso and two prospects.
After weeks of speculation that veteran's Yunel Escobar and Ben Zobrist would be traded, teams such as the Yankees, Giants, and Blue Jays were thought to be a likely landing spot for one of the two infielders. Today it has been reported that they both have been traded to the Athletics. Last season Zobrist finished his Rays career appearing in 146 games while batting .272 with 10 Home Runs. While on the other hand, Yunel Escobar batted .258 and managed to hit 7 HR.
The Rays did not want to give their two middle infielders away easily, so in return they demanded catcher Jon Jaso, who batted very similar to Escobar with a .264 batting average and 9 Home Runs. They also received two of Oakland's top prospects, SS Daniel Robertson and OF Boog Powell. After trading away catcher Ryan Hannigan and signing Asdrubal Cabrera, the club decided that they now needed a catcher. With an abundance of infielders they decided to use the trade market to acquire a catcher, ultimately Jon Jaso was their choice.
In my "If I were manager" articles coming out next month, you will see Yunel and Ben as duets in the middle of the infield yet again, this time as an Athletic. Billy Bean continues to work his magic and confuse the media as best as he can.
